Hello,
For well over a decade, the Amazon Associates Program has worked with thousands of California residents. Unfortunately, a potential new law that may be signed by Governor Brown compels us to terminate this program for California-based participants. It specifically imposes the collection of taxes from consumers on sales by online retailers - including but not limited to those referred by California-based marketing affiliates like you - even if those retailers have no physical presence in the state.
We oppose this bill because it is unconstitutional and counterproductive. It is supported by big-box retailers, most of which are based outside California, that seek to harm the affiliate advertising programs of their competitors. Similar legislation in other states has led to job and income losses, and little, if any, new tax revenue. We deeply regret that we must take this action.
As a result, we will terminate contracts with all California residents that are participants in the Amazon Associates Program as of the date (if any) that the California law becomes effective. We will send a follow-up notice to you confirming the termination date if the California law is enacted. In the event that the California law does not become effective before September 30, 2011, we withdraw this notice. As of the termination date, California residents will no longer receive advertising fees for sales referred to Amazon.com, Endless.com, MYHABIT.COM or SmallParts.com. Please be assured that all qualifying advertising fees earned on or before the termination date will be processed and paid in full in accordance with the regular payment schedule.
You are receiving this email because our records indicate that you are a resident of California. If you are not currently a resident of California, or if you are relocating to another state in the near future, you can manage the details of your Associates account here. And if you relocate to another state in the near future please contact us for reinstatement into the Amazon Associates Program.
To avoid confusion, we would like to clarify that this development will only impact our ability to offer the Associates Program to California residents and will not affect their ability to purchase from Amazon.com, Endless.com, MYHABIT.COM or SmallParts.com.
We have enjoyed working with you and other California-based participants in the Amazon Associates Program and, if this situation is rectified, would very much welcome the opportunity to re-open our Associates Program to California residents. We are also working on alternative ways to help California residents monetize their websites and we will be sure to contact you when these become available.
Regards,
The Amazon Associates Team

Hulu is discontinuing McHale's Navy. Four seasons of 30-36 shows per, and won't allow copy....
or even discussion about how to copy/capture hulu shows for your own enjoyment. seems not available elsewhere, either.

One of my clients was on a PT Boat and really loves this discontinued show. I enjoy it because it's gentle, not in your face, broadcast.
Suspect it's being discontinued because it portrays the little guy, the individual, winning against the establishment, and the big powerful guy and or that government is stupid and needs to be circumnavigated ... all these types of shows are now removed and currently disappearing from the social consciousness " memories" ... people will soon forget this type of thinking, it's anti big brother ... shows like Blake 7 etc... will never be seen again...  even the prisoner remake is really, not the same, at all .....  FYI  .....  " Those in power are good and knows what's best for you "

The World According To Monsanto - FULL LENGTH FILM

The World According To Monsanto

There's nothing they are leaving untouched: the mustard, the okra, the bringe oil, the rice, the cauliflower. Once they have established the norm: that seed can be owned as their property, royalties can be collected. We will depend on them for every seed we grow of every crop we grow. If they control seed, they control food, they know it -- it's strategic. It's more powerful than bombs. It's more powerful than guns. This is the best way to control the populations of the world. The story starts in the White House, where Monsanto often got its way by exerting disproportionate influence over policymakers via the "revolving door". One example is Michael Taylor, who worked for Monsanto as an attorney before being appointed as deputy commissioner of the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 1991. While at the FDA, the authority that deals with all US food approvals, Taylor made crucial decisions that led to the approval of GE foods and crops. Then he returned to Monsanto, becoming the company's vice president for public policy.

Thanks to these intimate links between Monsanto and government agencies, the US adopted GE foods and crops without proper testing, without consumer labeling and in spite of serious questions hanging over their safety. Not coincidentally, Monsanto supplies 90 percent of the GE seeds used by the US market. Monsanto's long arm stretched so far that, in the early nineties, the US Food and Drugs Agency even ignored warnings of their own scientists, who were cautioning that GE crops could cause negative health effects. Other tactics the company uses to stifle concerns about their products include misleading advertising, bribery and concealing scientific evidence.

Former Skype Employees Find Devil in Options Contract Details
2011-06-23 21:00:00.12 GMT

By Peter Burrows and Joseph Galante
June 24 (Bloomberg) -- For decades, people such as Yee Lee  have been coming to Silicon Valley lured by the chance to work for a salary and by stock options that give employees the right to buy a chunk of the company they work for and cash in big when it goes public or gets acquired.
It's so much a part of the culture that most experienced high-tech hands don't bother hiring a lawyer to read the fine print on a prospective employer's stock-option plan, just as they wouldn't hire a benefits expert to check the health plan.   Which is why Lee says he was surprised by what happened after he left Skype Technologies SA, the Luxembourg-based Internet-calling service, in April.
Normally options give employees the right to buy shares at the price on the grant date, once they've worked at the company for a time. After a month of back-and-forth with Skype's human resources department, Lee learned that even his "vested" options were worthless, Bloomberg Businessweek reports in its June 27 issue.
It turns out the investor group, led by private-equity firm Silver Lake Partners that bought Skype from San Jose, California-based EBay Inc. in 2009 had secured a repurchase right that gave them authority to buy back the shares at the grant price.

                       'Ounce of Flesh'

"I've never heard of a company taking away vested options," says compensation expert and Bloomberg News consultant Graef Crystal. "It invalidates the meaning of the word 'vested.'"   The policy may be even more infuriating to some recently departed Skype employees. Just weeks ago, on May 10, they were elated when Microsoft Corp., the world's biggest software maker, agreed to buy the company for $8.5 billion, more than four times the $2 billion the Silver Lake-led group offered EBay. Given that massive payday, Lee says he can't understand why Silver Lake would begrudge him the $70,000 or so gain he would have made on the shares he'd earned for his 13 months of work at the company.
"If you've already made so much money, why do you have to squeeze every ounce of flesh out of every person?" he asks.    Silver Lake, based in Menlo Park, California, declined to comment.
When asked about Lee's situation, Skype spokesman Brian  O'Shaughnessy said, "You've got to be in it to win it. The company chose to include that clause in the contract in order to retain the best and the brightest people to build great products. This individual chose to leave, therefore he doesn't get that benefit."

                       Fired Executives

Lee and another past employee say the policy is particularly unfair to top executives such as former Chief Strategy Officer Christopher Dean and Don Albert, head of advertising, who are among six senior managers fired in recent weeks. They, after all, were part of the crew that expanded Skype to the point that Redmond, Washington-based Microsoft was willing to pay $8.5 billion to acquire it.
The other ex-Skyper, who declined to be named because he wasn't authorized to discuss the issue, estimates the total payout to these executives would have been less than $20 million. That works out to 0.3 percent of the profits Silver Lake and the other investors will pocket from the Microsoft acquisition (assuming shareholders approve the deal).

                      Lobbying the Board

Such talk can't help Skype as it tries to attract top  talent. Google Inc., Apple Inc., Facebook Inc., and other companies are throwing rich packages at tech veterans such as Lee, who has held jobs at PayPal Inc., the online-payments platform owned by EBay, and Slide Inc., a San Francisco-based photo-sharing site.     While most technology companies distribute options to a high percentage of employees, Silver Lake had initially wanted to give them only to the ten top executives, say two people familiar with the negotiations who requested anonymity because the information isn't public. Only after former CEO Josh Silverman lobbied the board did they agree to give options to 60
percent of the workforce.     While Lee concedes the legal documentation exists for the  repurchase right, he says nobody at the company mentioned it when he joined Skype in March 2010.   "I would have never gone to work there had I known," he says.

                        The Fine Print

The 11-page stock option agreement he signed looked to him like boilerplate and suggested a typical "one-year cliff" at which point 25 percent of his four-year option grant would vest. The only mention that the company had the right to buy if he  left in less than five years came in a single sentence toward the end of the document that referred him to yet another document, which Lee says he didn't seek out.     By early 2011, Lee had tired of a grueling travel schedule and decided to take a job at Silicon Valley startup Katango. When he asked Skype for a form on April 6 so he could exercise his vested shares, an HR staffer promised to send it to him by the end of the week.
She got back to him 11 days later with the bad news: His vested shares were worthless. Worse than worthless, because the company's decision to repurchase would also cause him a personal tax hit. After three more weeks of e-mails, on May 25, Lee wrote to Skype Chief Executive Officer Tony Bates, citing "unusual and potentially unethical business practices." He asked Bates, hired the previous September, not to enforce the repurchase clause and let Skype staffers leave with some windfall.     "For me personally, the sum of money involved here is not life changing," Lee wrote. "So I knew that the dollar amounts have even less impact on Skype as an enterprise."

Bad Droid, Bad.

Well I didn't drop it, I was just holding it when 1/4 of the screen died on my Droid X.

It was the most important part of the screen with all the controls, to answer and hang up the phone.

It's been a little under a year. Verizon took 4 days to replace it even with ~$7 expedited shipping. They now have their Droid X2 that's nearly identical in appearance but would cost $200 something to replace my bad phone with.

Fwd: Lexan* polycarbonate resin - request your feedback

Lexan is great stuff. It's an unbreakable plastic, and when it first came out was famous for being bulletproof. Demos of people smacking it with hammers and only denting it were common.
It's great to machine and unlike acrillic it doesn't crack or chip.
The only real problem is it's soft and scratches easily. If they only had some sort of scratch reistant layer it would be much better.

When used as a window over time it tended to get cloudy like someone sandpapered it.

Anyhow, Enumera has been dead for 10 years, so it weird they'd send me an E-mail there with a survey.

In my original designs the front case was a Lexan windows showing the internals.

Understanding Engineers

Understanding Engineers

Below are some humorous examples that help explain how engineers think. Now you'll know why some guys end up with engineering degrees!

Is it possible to understand Engineers.  They are strange, you know!
Understanding Engineers #1
Two engineering students were biking across a university campus when one said, "Where did you get such a great bike?" The second engineer replied, "Well, I was walking along yesterday, minding my own business, when a beautiful woman rode up on this bike, threw it to the ground, took off all her clothes and said, "Take what you want." The first engineer nodded approvingly and said, "Good choice: The clothes probably wouldn't have fit you anyway."
Understanding Engineers #2
To the optimist, the glass is half-full. To the pessimist, the glass is half-empty. To the engineer, the glass is twice as big as it needs to be.
Understanding Engineers #3
A priest, a doctor, and an engineer were waiting one morning for a particularly slow group of golfers. The engineer fumed, "What's with those guys? We must have been waiting for fifteen minutes!" The doctor chimed in, "I don't know, but I've never seen such inept golf!" The priest said, "Here comes the greens-keeper. Let's have a word with him." He said, "Hello George, What's wrong with that group ahead of us? They're rather slow, aren't they?" The greens-keeper replied, "Oh, yes. That's a group of blind firemen. They lost their sight saving our clubhouse from a fire last year, so we always let them play for free anytime." The group fell silent for a moment. The priest said, "That's so sad. I think I will say a special prayer for them tonight." The doctor said, "Good idea. I'm going to contact my ophthalmologist colleague and see if there's anything she can do for them." The engineer said, "Why can't they play at night?"
Understanding Engineers #4
What is the difference between mechanical engineers and civil engineers? Mechanical engineers build weapons. Civil engineers build targets.
Understanding Engineers #5
The graduate with a science degree asks, "Why does it work?" The graduate with an engineering degree asks, "How does it work?" The graduate with an accounting degree asks, "How much will it cost?" The graduate with an arts degree asks, "Do you want fries with that?"
Understanding Engineers #6
Three engineering students were gathered together discussing who must have designed the human body. One said, "It was a mechanical engineer. Just look at all the joints." Another said, "No, it was an electrical engineer. The nervous system has many thousands of electrical connections." The last one said, "No, actually it had to have been a civil engineer. Who else would run a toxic waste pipeline through a recreational area?"
Understanding Engineers #7
Normal people believe that if it ain't broke, don't fix it. Engineers believe that if it ain't broke, it doesn't have enough features yet.
Understanding Engineers #8
An engineer was crossing a road one day, when a frog called out to him and said, "If you kiss me, I'll turn into a beautiful princess." He bent over, picked up the frog, and put it in his pocket. The frog spoke up again and said, "If you kiss me, I'll turn back into a beautiful princess and stay with you for one week." The engineer took the frog out of his pocket, smiled at it and returned it to the pocket. The frog then cried out, "If you kiss me and turn me back into a princess, I'll stay with you for one week and do anything you want." Again, the engineer took the frog out, smiled at it and put it back into his pocket. Finally, the frog asked, "What is the matter? I've told you I'm a beautiful princess and that I'll stay with you for one week and do anything you want. Why won't you kiss me?" The engineer said, "Look, I'm an engineer. I don't have time for a girlfriend, but a talking frog - now that's cool."

Massive protest and hunger strike in New Delhi India.

I just got this in Email from a friend.

Guys,
Incredible event underway right now in New Delhi.
200,000 people have arrived form all over the country, and gathered in Delhi, they have sat on a fast to death against govt corruption.
It is being MASSIVELY under-reported by the media. Almost silence - Just small titbits, but the gathering is HUGE, There are 2 km long qs of people on foot, all around delhi,

Govt is in paralysis on what to do about it,
Baba Ramdev - our yoga guruji is leading the morcha.

This is so a giant moment for india, becoz ppl are sick of the corruption in hi places, so have come on their own expense, from as far away as Hyderabad and madras. to sit on a hunger strike. The heat in Delhi is incredible right now, but there are 200,000 people in the ramlila maidan already.

I wish Google would shoot some live imagery and show the extent of the crowd.

UPDATE   6/4/2011
----------------------
Yesterday nite was the DARKEST hour of the Indian nation.
At 1.30 AM mid night, the indian govt brutally crushed  the agitation.

at 1.30 am, the ground was mostly empty, there were approx 10,000 people sleeping in rugs and mats.

In the darkness of the night, about 5000 armed personnel from Delhi Police + Rapid Action force  attached the peaceful protestors with sticks and tear gas shells,

100s of people have broken limbs and are hospitalized.

the leader  'baba ramdev' had to flee the scene in woman's clothes.
he has reached his hermitage in hardwar and has wowed to continue the agitation.

old timers are saying that even the British were never this brutal when they ruled India.

John,
I am seeing something incredible -Youtube has videos of last 2 days events in New Delhi
google for  'ramdev delhi fast'

- but the only videos present on the site are the ones WITHOUT the police brutality !!
nothing showing what the police did last nite !!

Product ideas - EarthQuake early warning system.

This is my notes about a possible product I was considering back in the 90's I eventually wrote this up in 2007.
I ended up deciding I wanted to stick to my Video work.
So I am publishing it here. Please excuse spelling and grammar errors, I haven't cleaned this up.

I think by now others have also started to implement systems like this.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Goal:
To make Internet connected earthquake early warning devices as ubiquitous as smoke detectors are today.

Basic Concept:
To use a mesh of low cost microprocessors connected together over the internet to detect and track waves from earthquakes that are large enough to cause damage.

The Challenge:
To use the internet to relay and provide early warning as large waves from an earthquake damage and shut down the power grid and the internet infrastructure.
An earthquake wave must be detected and reported in the fractions of a second before the power and internet fail from the effect of these destructive waves.

The Device:
I small box about the size of the old Radio Shack weather cubes ~ 10^3 cm , but connected to WiFi or Ethernet.  Contains a speaker, one or two simple push button controls and internal shake sensors.

System Overview:

Hardware
simple CPU project boards, Atmel, Altera Nios, PIC micro
   Ethernet
Tilt switches / motion sensors.  To detect only gross movement.
Digital Input for Seismic Pwave detectors.
Relay,  Digital output for input to alarm / protection systems.

Possible output LCD display or serial RS232 / RS485 for LED sign output too.

Software
Setup P2P grid over public IP internet.

When one area get's hit it reports to neighbors and several remote servers of it's disturbance.
When several get hit together they propagate a warning.

System needs to know zipcode or GPS location.  GPS will not be included.
Back end server could confirm location based on IP address.

Detection and early warning of:
 Primarily Earthquakes

Could also warn of Tsunami's, Tornados, Hurricanes, flood or strong winds if connected to Weather feed.

--------------------------------------
  1. P-Wave: These are called 'P' for Primary Wave is a Compressional wave and travel the fastest and are usually felt first. They are basically sound waves that travel thru the earth from the epicenter of an earthquake. Physics types know this as a longitudinal wave. It "shakes" things in the same direction it travels. For example, if a P-Wave is traveling West to East, all the things in the way, like people and buildings, will oscillate or move back and forth in the West-East direction. Similar to a long straight line of bumber cars! The one in the rear hits the first one and it hits the one in front of it and so on and so on. After each collision, the car bounces back to its original position only to be hit and bumped forward again. Some properties?
    1. FAST! They can travel up to 20 times the speed of sound in air!
    2. Typical speeds are 330 m/s in air, 1450 m/s in water and about 5000 m/s in granite
    3. Usually noticed like, "I heard the earthquake coming!" This is because it IS, indeed, a sound wave. Most often it isn't noticed tho.
    4. Very little, if any, damage.
  2. S-Wave: Shear waves, also known as secondary or S-waves are much slower and much more destructive than P-Waves. They are transverse waves. This means they make the earth vibrate perpendicularly to the direction of the wave travel. Not getting it? Think of a rope loosely held by two people. One person starts moving his/her/its hand up and down rapidly. Notice the "wave" in the rope goes from person 'A' to person 'B' while the rope itself simply vibrates up and down - perpendicular to the direction between the two people. This wave causes damage due to its configuration. It causes buildings to be thrust upward from the ground then the ground drops out from under it as the wave travels by.
  3. Rayleigh Wave: This is a combination P and S-Wave. It's analogous to an ocean wave. It's both longitudinal AND transverse. It's hard to envision, The surface, while vibrating forward and backward in the direction of the wave is vibrating up and down perpendicular to the direction of the wave. The result is the surface moving in a vertical circular path - back and forth AND up and down. The Rayleigh wave is particularly damaging because it force against structures is moving in two directions at once.
  4. Love Wave: Not a scary sounding wave, but very destructive! This one is similar to a Rayleigh Wave but on its side. It forces the the surface to move forward and backward and left and right at the same time, in a circular motion. This is also, very damaging.

P or push waves, S or shake/shear waves and L or surface waves.

The mechanical properties of the rocks that seismic waves travel through quickly organize the waves into two types. Compressional waves, also known as primary or P waves, travel fastest, at speeds between 1.5 and 8 kilometers per second in the Earth's crust. Shear waves, also known as secondary or S waves, travel more slowly, usually at 60% to 70% of the speed of P waves.

Earthquake waves travel at very high speeds - about 7 km per second (about 25,000 km per hour).

Magill's Survey of Science. Earth Science Series, Vol. I. Magill-Salem, 1984. "P-wave: a type of seismic wave generated at the focus of an earthquake traveling 6 -8 km/s, with a push and pull vibratory motion parallel to the direction of propagation; ''P"stands for primary, as P waves are the first and fastest to arrive at a seismic station." 6 - 8 km/s
Parent's Guide - P. Earthquake ABC. USGS. "Local rock type and the depth of the earthquake cause slight variations, but the number of seconds between the P and S wave times 5 is approximately the distance in miles to the earthquake. (Remember that some of that distance may be down into the Earth.)" 8 km/s

Don't trust -  The primary or P-waves move through the earth at a speed of 3 miles/second. The secondary or S-waves move through the earth at a speed of 2 miles/second.

7 (kilometers per second) = 15 658.554 mph = 4.34 Miles per second

1.5 (kilometers per second) = 3 355.40444 mph

S-wave will take 20 second and p-wave will take 30 seconds to travel 80 miles.

"A capability is emerging, however, to predict and warn of effects within tens of seconds after an earthquake occurs, but before the seismic waves reach a specific place, using high speed data acquisition, processing, and communications systems."

"For wellinstrumented volcanoes, it is possible within seconds following an eruption, to predict when a flow of water and mud down a valley might reach a city, with sufficient lead time to implement emergency measures before the flow arrives. Similarly, it is possible to detect the occurrence of an earthquake and send warnings before the seismic waves reach places more than several tens-of-kilometres away, in time to sound alarms or take other measures."

"The seismic waves generated at the earthquake focus propagate outward at velocities of about 6-8 km/sec, and the more destructive waves travel at an even lower velocity. Therefore, it would take the first waves at least ten seconds to reach a distance of 100 km from the focus, for example, by which time the parameters of the event can be determined and disseminated automatically. This in fact has already been done in Mexico City following an earthquake, and the capability presently exists to do it in southern California. Such information can be used for a variety of actions, including activating valves, backing up computers, and redirecting electrical and communications circuits"

Earthquake net

To track earthquakes and use the internet as an advanced warning systems for earthquakes

Do this as an opensource project

Can be useful for UPS , automatic shutdown and backup procedure, auto turn off of chemical processes, opening of fire dept garage doors etc.

System could also include panic buttons
could also provide advanced warning of other sudden events like tornadoes and tsunamis.

protocol will include several forms of detectors.
1.) clapper ( ring with metal wire in center that makes contact with shaking over ~3mm)
  2.) Pwave
3.) Seismic that can provide an analog data feed even.
4.) None, just it's very presents of on net reports some info.   (we could also track net failures...?)

Clients
------
clients must be registered with ID numbers and security keys. There is a client ID per computer or location.
Clients must provide zipcodes or lat/lon, this can be confirmed by IP address, we can also do this with a referral only system.

Do a Linux and BSD parallel port driver that generates a simple IRQ when 2 pins make contact, use  a simple bell clapper type of circuit for large shake detection.
Mayeb a USB serial device for windows?

basic protocol
-------------

XML file is pulled from master web site where equake servers are located.

eQuake servers
speak udp

track users status
every 4 minutes udp packets are pinged, these report status
if shaking occurs clients send udp immediately to server.

If server sees (n) clients in similar regions activated in a short time span then server sends out flood of UDP to all registered clients warning them.

Early Earthquake Warning System In iOS 5
"A very important and functional feature has been added to Apple's iOS 5 for Japanese users: an earthquake warning system. This new feature may allow the people of Japan to be warned early enough to get out of harm's way and ultimately save lives. Most phones sold in Japan have some way to warn the user of Earthquakes."
